Straw Crafts

Straw crafts are a traditional Japanese handicraft made from rice straw. Used for centuries in daily life as household goods and decorative items, these handcrafted pieces embody the warmth, purity, and rustic charm of Japanese craftsmanship.

Hinokage Town, Miyazaki
Nestled in the northern part of Miyazaki Prefecture, Hinokage Town is a nature-rich area surrounded by the Kyushu Mountains and pristine rivers. The town has a unique tradition of displaying shimenawa (sacred straw ropes) year-round and is located next to Takachiho, a place deeply rooted in Japanese mythology. This harmonious blend of nature and cultural heritage makes Hinokage a truly captivating region.

Warazaiku Takubo
For over 70 years, Warazaiku Takubo has been dedicated to preserving and crafting straw goods in Hinokage Town, Miyazaki. Now led by third-generation artisan Yoichiro Kai and his team, the workshop continues the tradition of growing rice and carefully handcrafting straw into beautiful, meaningful creations. Through their work, they not only preserve the art of shimenawa and straw crafts but also pass down the spirit of craftsmanship to future generations.
